Sparkling gourami ovaries?

I recently picked up some sparkling gouramis from a lfs, and while trying to determine the m/f mix I've hit a small roadblock. Most care guides say that there's not a lot of sexual dimoprhism between them, but that with a bright light behind them the female will have visible ovaries. The thing is... I have no idea what they look like. Since they've already picked up that human near the glass = food I was able to get some semi-decent photos of them with the tank light backlighting them a bit.

First attachment shows the one that has some darker masses in the abdomen; are those the ovaries? Second one is what I'm presuming is a male, with a clearish abdomen. There's a third fish also with a clear abdomen, but it's significantly smaller than the others and probably isn't mature yet.

Sorry I am no help.

Just wanted to say those are good pictures. I have 2 sparkling gouramis and I really enjoy them. Beautiful fish and interesting behavior.

The difference between the sexes on the sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is generally pretty clear. Both sexes have maroon spots which form a mid-lateral bar. Above this bar in males are the same spots which form another bar or an arch of spots. Females lack the second bar except a spot here and there. I used to think there were differences in the tips of dorsal and anal finnage, but there's little difference in the finnage on adults. To me, it appears that both your fish are males.

If you plan to breed them, be prepared for feeding VERY small fry for about a week before they are able to take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. I have used a combination of live infusorians and Golden Pearls (5 to 50 micron size). These tiny guys are quite prolific with broods exceeding 100 fry (not bad for 1" plus breeders). They grow rapidly once they are eating brine shrimp and are nearly adult size at about 10 weeks. A display of a dozen or more of these little guys is striking with the right lighting. Groups do well together and coexist without any real damage to the constantly displaying males. With 2-3 fish, you'll see much more chasing by the dominant individuals

Check out the photos of males & females here:

Exciting update... It was a male and female after all! I heard a lot of activity in the tank so I tried recording them croaking, and out of the corner of my eye I spotted those two coupling up. Attached a still of the male adding to his bubble nest.

I don't think fry will survive in this tank due to the abundance of tank mates, but it's neat to know I've got a breeding pair if I ever want to try raising the fry seriously.
