Mystery Fish?

I have a dedicated crystal red shrimp 10 gallon. The only thing on the is the shrimp and a few snails. This morning I walked over to the tank and SOMETHING swam back into the plants. My tank is heavily planted to give the shrimp security, so it's very hard to see where it went.

I only saw it for a second so my description might not be great. It looked like it had black and tan stripes, and was about an inch long, and very thin.

I only saw it for a few moments and didn't get a very good look. I haven't been able to see it again. Unless I'm seeing things, somehow this got into my tank.

Does anyone have any idea what this is? Or how it could get into my tank? Is there something like this that can lay eggs on a plant? I can't see how else this happened. Any ideas on how to get it out are also appreciated.

So, I definitely didn't imagine it. I saw it again. It's a little frustrating. Does anyone know what this is? And if it will eat my fry (I'm guessing yes).

Looks like a pencilfish to me. If that's what it is, then it will only eat the tiniest shrimp fry, as in aquaria they don't seem to eat anything larger than cyclops and BBS.

Looks like flying fox to me, wouldn't keep them with shrimp if that's what it is.

NVM see updated post below. Not flying fox.

Or SAE but hard to tell from photo.

NVM now that I am on my computer definitely not SAE or atleast any that I am aware of. MissChris is probably right on this one. Those multiple lines that shows up when I can see the pic rules out most of the others.

Neat little fish.

Could it be a type of Killifish? I hear the eggs might set for six to eight weeks before hatching. Might explain how it got into a shrimp only tank.

The mouth shape (as far as I can see in the pic) looks wrong for a killie.

Most egg-laying fish (excepting some nesting types) will either accidently or on purpose lay eggs on on or at the base of plants, so it likely hitchhiked as an egg on an aquarium plant, and just was small and hidden in the greenery up until now.

Attached is a pic of one variety of pencilfish, though there are several other related species that look quite similar. Most all have a small mouth, torpedo body shape and strong horizontal stripes, mostly in black and white (a few with gold or red). They are generally peaceful.

It's a Bluefin Killie, Lucania goodei, from Florida. They come mixed in with ghost shrimp or as eggs attached to plants.

Yeah that looks about right. I wonder if the 2nd line is a trick of the picture. Thats the only thing that kind of throws it off for the bluefin.

pretty sure its not a trick. i see many pics on google that show the bluefin having a second line. here is a nice clear picture of one listed as a bluefin killi. https://farm8.static.flickr.com/7117...ed0e804e_b.jpg
