DIY Magnets - How Strong for 1/2 inch Glass?

I'm building several DIY magnetic float switch holders which will use magnets ordered from magnet4sale.com (or somewhere similar). The thing I'm not sure about though is how strong the magnets should be to work well with 1/2" glass. Anyone used such magnets before with glass this thick?

Thanks,
Harry

I have played with those magnets quite a bit. The biggest problem is that magnets that are strong enough are also extremely dangerous to handle. If you get two of them close to each other they can slam together hard enough to shatter the magnets, pinch off a piece of your finger, etc. And, if the once get together you can pretty well assume they are permanently together. Separating the strong ones is very hard to do.

But, with enough care, you can use them with 1/2" glass. I was able to use them with 3/8" glass, but I quit, partly because of the problem of keeping them separated.

Here is the best source for magnets: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/categorie...FYZefgodQ0UFQw

don't know if i'm to late, but if you have a 3d printer I designed this
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:988540

it works with Neodymium Magnets 2" x 1" x 3/4" and works very well with 3/8" glass and pretty good for 1/2" removes the algae from my planted tank well.
