Polyurethane Foam as Filter Media

I've made my own DIY wet/dry filter for my tank. Polyfill is what I currently have as my mechanical filter, but I'm thinking about switching to polyurethane foam (project foam). Would this be harmful at all?

PU foam is a fantastic filter medium. You just need to be sure it has not been treated with flame retardants, mildew-cide, or any other things that may leach and kill your loved ones. I never had any issues, but buying foam specifically made for fish tank filtration may be worth the peace of mind.

A lot of people also use pillow stuffing that you can buy at any craft store.
