I decided my column aquarium needed a cleaner look. Doing away will most of my plants and concentrating on an open space with a rock scape. I don't trust a tower of rocks in a column aquarium, and can never find good rocks that stack well.
For less than $50 I made this.
My supplies were
Black concrete tint
1" Green foam board
GE silicone 1
Black diamond medium blasting media
dollar store paint brushes
I just randomly cut foam and layered it leaving some indents at the top for the intake and return of my canister. Gluing each layer together with silicone.
Then I mixed a 1:4 ratio of black diamond to drylok and darkened it to as dark as I could. Made it thick and slathered it on, sprinkling on extra black diamond as I went. After drying I mixed up 3 batches of color(dark but not dark as first layer, medium, and light) in a 1:1 ratio of drylok and water. Using paper towels I blotted on colors from darkest to lightest using a clean paper towel to pick up excess paint. Once those dried(pretty quickly) I took a small coarse brush and just dipped the tips in white drylok and lightly brushed it out and dragged it across each layer.
Now I just need to run it over a table saw to size it to the right width for the tank and strip down the tank and glue it in.
