Diy spare "ready" biomedia

So I'm looking to fill a couple homemade tubes (from crafting canvas) with living bio media to roll around in the bottom of my tanks (one in each tank) in case something happens and I have to loose my cycle I can grab a tube from one of my other tanks.

How do I go about this... Does the media have to be in my filter for awhile before I cage it in the tube? Also is there a cheap diy media I can use in the tubes or do I need to buy some bio max etc? Also will the bacteria stay alive just chilling on the media with the tube stationary in the corner of my tanks?

Thanks for any input!

Best for it to be in a current. Can you see behind your tank ? Marineland has a
breeder box that works like an HOB and goes on the top rim on the back just like an HOB.
You could get the small one(About $9/w Amazon Prime for their free shipping or about $12 without the free shipping) and just fill with bio-media. Really just a sponge would do but something like Matrix/Fluval ceramic bio-media etc will do also. On the Fluval I use their "pre-filter" because it comes in 750g quantities and other similar media comes in smaller amounts. The 500ml size is enough on the Matrix.

The shortest distance between any two points is a straight the opposite direction...
