Every time I opened my bubble counter it always smelled like rotting alcohol. Too play it safe add a bubble counter to your DIY CO2. You don't want that mix it your tank. Even though the tubing isn't actually in the yeast mix, the mix can bubble up and when the bubbles pop they can hit the tubing and be sucked up. I've stuck my finger in the bubble counter water before it didn't taste like water.....

I'm not exactly sure what would happen to fish if they were slowly exposed to yeast mix, its probably not good though, I'm sure it would mess with the water quality. Check all the tubing on your CO2 set up, see if there's any unwanted build up in there. That should give you an idea of what's traveling through the tubing if anything. If you suspect the tank's been contaminated do a water change, add some carbon to the filter and install a bubble counter.
