Aquaponics ebb & flow, cheap & easy

Here's an easy aquaponics growbox design that's been filtering a tank and grown food/other plants for me.
It's been working for two years with this simple ebb&flow pipe without missing a beat. Which is far better than I can say about any bell siphon I ever tried to come up with…

The parts:

Filter cloth to the ends of the drainage tube:

Safety overflow (in case the other gets jammed) and an inlet for the ebb&flow pipe:

Sliding the drainage tube on the inlet:

Drainage installed:

Pre-glued pipe, gaskets, vaseline:

Pipe installed into the inlet:

Basic level of the water at the start of the siphon:

…can be adjusted up (longer cycle)

…or down (faster cycle)

…or stopped altogether (in case you need to keep the water high and let the overflow take care of the flow)

There. Easy and cheap.
Now just fill the box with the growbed material of your choice and install a pump to get some water flowing.

Thanks of looking.

That looks like a really simple solution.

What size grow box can be served by that 1/2" pipe? When would you upsize the pipe?

The pipe is 16 mm or about 5/8''.

The grow bed is 40x60 cm or 1'4''x2'.

I haven't been studying the size of the bed it can serve, really.
I don't know if there is a table for the size of the bed to the flow rate either.
Actually, the equation in between the size of the bed, flow rate and the amount and growth rate of the plants is quite complicated ( = beats me).

But what has been great with this setup is that it's never stopped the automatic ebb&flow, even while the flow rate fluctuates a bit in time. Im using a pump with a pre-filter foam and naturally, it slowly reduces the flow in between washings of the pre-filter.

LOL

Yes, I do a lot of 'never mind trying to figure it out, just try it and fix it when it doesn't work'!

Cool set up! Thanks for sharing. I wish this thread was here a month ago when I spent an entire weekend figuring out how to make a bell siphon for my home aquaponics set up.

I feel you. Trying out the dimensions of the outer and inner tube for a bell siphon at a given flow rate is a pain.
And at least for me, after getting them to work, they always seem to quit on me when there's the slightest change in the flow…
