Trophy case into moss propagation/quarantine tank.

So this might be a totally useless DIY for y'all, but it's what I had on hand, so here goes.

Background:
I'm getting a new tank sometime in the next couple of months, but I wanted to start collecting and growing moss now. If this works (ie, hold water) I may also use it as a quarantine tank.

The reason I'm using a trophy/football case is I found it in my garage and wanted to use it rather than throw it away.

It looks like this:

And it comes in two interlocking pieces, like this:

Step 1: Determine which side will be on top, and separate it. These u-shaped panels came from a mold, so there were no seams to just strip and pull apart. To get past this, I took my drill and made tiny holes along the edge. Once I drilled the holes (forgot to take a pic), the lid portion snapped off cleanly.

Step 2: Clean up the rough/sharp edges. I don't care that much about looks for this project, so I just used a torch to melt the edges until all the sharp bits were gone. You could also use a file, if you wanted a nicer edge.

Tomorrow, I'll seal the other edges with silicone to make the case/tank watertight.

Thanks for reading!

Interesting idea, good luck. I hope this works out for you. Does it have a wood pedestal to sit on?

Leave the football in there and let it get covered in moss

Knm<><, no, it doesn't. I don't know if it ever had a stand -- it was left by the previous homeowners. At least I found one thing that was useful out of all they crap they left behind when they moved!

Dead2fall, if I had a football, I would. Alas, the only balls in my house are tennis balls, and my dog would be quite upset if I stole one of her treasures lol.

I siliconed the tank Wednesday and filled it with water last night. I used a wet erase marker to mark the water level and left it in the bathtub overnight.

When I checked it this morning, I noticed it was, in fact, leaking. I wasn't surprised -- I've never done this before. So I dumped the remaining water, dried it off, and redid the silicone. Now I've got to wait another 48 hours before I can do leak checks again.
