DIY lid

Hiya. I'm setting up a 55gal tank that I picked up from a friend. It's 48" long with a support bracket in the center. It came with two individual hoods that each have a single 15w T8 bulb over a glass window and then a solid black plastic lid that flips up. It looks nice but is ineffective for plants for the most part.

I ordered a Catalina 4x54 Solar T5 setup which came yesterday (in pieces due to shipping but I worked that out). If I leave the original lid on most of the surface area is covered by the black plastic lid so that won't work. The Catalina sits about 3 inches above the surface of the water so if I don't have a lid it gets a considerable amount of splash and condensation on the bulbs. I assume that's not good. However, it's also a bit awkward to move were I just use sheets of glass or a standard All Glass style flip up lid.

I assume this is a pretty common set up and I bet someone has come up with an awesome lid solution. I searched but couldn't find anything. Anyone have any tips?

Thanks!

My contribution. Lowe's in my area does carry the outside end corner. It's in a rack of various cap strips on the end of the tile board aisle. At first glance, it doesn't look up to the job, nor does it look exactly like the picture in the thread at https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/di...s-top-how.html

What we have looks too flimsy to do the job. It does work though - with window glass. Polished edge window glass. I hand 'sand' glass edges with emery cloth. The local store has ivory and tan.

Well, after visiting four different stores and not finding anything that resembled that piece of molding it looks like this will actually have to be a DIY affair in every sense. I'll post pics if anything worthwhile comes of it.

There are no major home improvement stores around here. I went to a True Value, a Copeland/Doit Best Lumber, a tile store, and a plastic fabricator.

I have a pretty good picture in my head of how it can be done with wood and a router or table saw though.
