DIY 10g Canpoy and Base

After seeing what customdrumfinishes had done with his 10g (https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/di...ini-stand.html) I was inspired to create something similar for a tank I'll be setting up for a family member.

I seriously underestimated the importance of a quality mitre saw/box, my cheapo resulted in the hideous butt joints and gobs of wood filler that you see. I would have chosen a different color stain, however that is what will match their furniture.

If/when I build another I'll definitely use a continuous hinge (piano hinge) so light doesn't escape, and hopefully I'll have the scratch to throw down on some real woodworking tools and nicer looking hardwoods or nice ply. All in all a fun project.

Looks good to me. The joints like you said are to be desired, but all in all, you did a pretty nice job without having the right tools. Piano hinge would have been nice, but hey aren't exactly cheap either.

Keep up the good work. Good luck on the next one when you get to it!

You could try this to help with the light leaking out of the hinge gap. HTH

Both base/canopies look great!!!

Thanks,
AndrewH

And now with lighting!

Sure did! Thanks again!

AndrewH>> I tried a lazy version of that with the reflectors, and I worked out ok. I really need to get some sweet graphic skills, nice mock up. I need a SketchUp for dummies...

So.....I didn't try anything fancy with the lighting. I had a few 20" strips laying around, so I gutted them for the endpieces, starters, and ballasts.

I made up some reflectors from an aluminum stud (Lowes $8?) and painted one white to see what difference it would have. Yup, should've painted
them both.

The "red" bulb is a GE AquaRays (9325k) and the "yellow" is a SunGlo (4200k). Just had these on hand as well, we'll see how they do.

Thinking of making this ODNO in the future. Not too fond of the heat or bulk of the magnetic ballasts.
