diy sump

I have a 20g sump running on my 75g display tank. I have a return pump and a canister returning water back to my tank.

So here is my question. Is it normal to be losing 2" of water in the return chamber every day or two

I would say yes, normal. The return chamber is where you experience all the effects of the evaporation. This time of year evaporation always accelerates for me and I feel like Im contantly adding water to the sump to avoid running dry. Time for an ATO?

If the 20 gallon is 13" tall then there are .65 gallons per inch. 2" would be 1.3 gallons. I estimated I lost 1 gallon a day from a 100 gallon tank run open top so this does seem a reasonable amount. Bigger sump? Cover the tank?

Yes, I also am having to top off my sumps pretty frequently. You can cover it, should slow the loss and help retain CO2 if it is well sealed.

I lose about 1/4" a day in my sump. I take it you don't have a tops on your tank. It would increase your water usages. I use to use lot more water until I put on glass tops.

i have a 20 long under my 60 gallon reef tank and during the summer, with the halides on and the fans blowing on the water of the display i use approx 1.5-2 gallons of top off a day. the height in which your return area of your sump all depend on the size of the return area.
