Diy tank rack shelf upgrade questions

So I have yet to purchase the rack but I am planing on getting a shop shelf system for my tanks. I will not be exceeding shelf wight limits
My question are
Can I just polyurethane the MDF instead of cutting new boards out of plywood?
Will this change the weight load of the boards in a negative way?
Would mounting a light to the bottom of a shelf board (pilot holes without anything sticking above the top of the shelf to affect tank on top of it) negatively effect the weight limit?
Any other options besides plywood I should consider as a shelf board?

I don't have easy access to tools to cut stuff down and I don't want to rely on Home Depot to cut my 5 shelves to fit perfectly. I guess I could always rent tools but I might as well build it from scratch if I chose to do that.

Any ideas you have and any photos you have of your shelf system would be much appreciated.
