paludarium false bottom?

I want to build a paludarium with a false bottom and an area with fish. Now when people use false bottoms then have a water area with fish do they complately seal off under the false bottom with the water area or do they just let the water get under? If they seal it how would you do this?

When I've done paludariums in the past, I didn't really have a set land area, I just built shelf-like areas, and had ledges off the back/sides. This way, the whole bottom was available to fish.

I'm not sure how well the false-bottom type would work with critters living in the water, I've mostly seen it used for vivariums and stuff, and the water was periodically drained out and discarded, not put back into circulation.

Use egg crate/ lighting diffuser on the bottom topped with window screen. Place the substrate on top of the screen and fill with water. However, there is no purpose in having a false bottom unless you are moving the water from the bottom back into the main water area. So this requires a filter or pump to move the water in the paludarium.

Or do not do false bottom but have an area at the back of the tank (that is hidden) that is part of the water area. Just google "paludarium build" and go from the there. It is much easier to explain when you have a photo.
