did a little sketchup

So I had an idea to build my own skimmer/ sump intake. I thought about using PVC U tubes but changed it to a total U shaped 1/4 acrylic top with a check valve to pull the air out. please tell me what y'all think of this design.. it will be all 1/4 acrylic welded

I don't see how the check valve lets the air out. The pressure inside will be lower than the outside air pressure, so it looks like nothing will cause the air to leave. Other than that, it looks interesting.

I plan to hook a small air tube to it and suck the air out. once the air is gone it should work like this one only with no U pipe. the whole thing will be a siphon U shaped channel. that channel will be 1/2 inch off the bottom and sealed all the way through. just the check vavle so I can vacuum the air out so it fills with water and the siphon works. should I make the side with the down tubes going to the sump lower than the tank skimmer/ overflow side like in the above pic?

Yes. Like that. I've got one I bought 20 years ago. You will find it's a PITA unless you put a pump on that check valve. Given my druthers I'd drill the tank.

The design is at least 20 years old. Drill the tank.
