regulating flow on DIY CO2

How can i regulate the flow on my DIY CO2? when the lights are on 1BPS is fine but when its lights out 1BPS is too much i think. i had a CO2 overdorse and it suffocated all my shrimp with 1BPS at night.

Wow.. That seems extreme for 1BPS to wipe out your shrimp. If you have a heavily planted tank, it's not a bad idea to run an airstone at night. Plants respirate the same way we do during the night and consume oxygen and discharge CO2 (look up light/dark reactions in photosynthesis to learn more). If your plants are also competing for the available oxygen in the tank, then it can become depleted from the water column. If your shrimp/fish are near the surface in the morning, then that is likely what has happened. If you wake up and find them gone, then I can pretty much gaurantee that's what happened.

At 1BPS, I would rather doubt it was the DIY CO2 that hurt your shrimp, but rather the collective respiration of the shrimp/plants/fish? coupled with the CO2 and a likely drastic PH swing that wouldn't have done them any favors either (assuming your alkalinity was off and allowed such).

Short answer, just run an airstone at night using an appliance timer to turn it on and you won't run into the problem again.
