Inexpensive sponges

I've been using sponges intended to wash cars with for my diy sponge filters. They fill up pretty quickly with gunk, so I'm thinking of switching to a coarser open cell foam. Any cheap sources besides just using filter blocks from the chain marts?

If you buy the poret style sponge material, it's actually a lot cheaper per sponge then pretty much anything else in the fish store. (might not be as cheap as car sponges, but I'd be hesitant to use them...)
