DIY sponge filter foam...locally

I'd like to make some sponge filters, but I have no idea what I should be looking for in a foam. Are they anythings that I should avoid? Can I pick up foam at Home Depot/Lowes?

Thanks,

Lamar

They sell foam for pond filters in HD, but it is pricey if you don't need the whole block. And very coarse as well.

Both drfostersmith and bigalsonline sell different sorts of filter foam for reasonable prices.

I would not use other foam, as you don't know what has been added, plus it might break down quickly.

Beware of other foam, as Wasserpest said.

A guru in my local club killed off his ENTIRE fishroom because he bought large sheets of upholstery foam to make sponge filters. It was the kind used for outdoor furniture and they treat it with a cyanide-like chemical to prevent mildew. That was an expensive mistake!

I forgot that I have some extra AC filters around. Problem solved.

Thanks for the help.
