go to the equiptment section and look at the first sticky.
i think its titled Review of Auto dosing Methods.
there are about 10 different examples of how you could put together something cheaply to automate your fert dosing. some are pretty involved and complex and probably not worth the effort when there are easier ways. using a water pump or powerhead you could make a pretty good setup, but i the pump has to fit inside the container and it just wouldnt work with any kind of bottle, you need a jar so the pump can fit inside.
i use a Tom's Aqualifter. they are about 15 dollars. it looks like an air pump, it has intake/outflow hookups for airline. this way i just drill the cap on a bottle and pull the line through to the bottom of the container. a digital timer kicks on the pump for X amount of minutes every other day and it dispenses say 30 ml of macro ferts. the same can be done with dosing traces. this method is probably the easiest/ most fool proof. i use a brinks 7 day digital timer i bought at wal mart. it runs in 1 minute increments and can be set for different days/times ect.
i just like the look of the bare metal with a good grain through it. it is simple but looks very modern, high tech. these go in with the rest of the equiptment, and are a huge improvement over a plastic bottle.
use dry ferts. i get mine from Orlando's Green Leaf Aquariums.
dose them dry at first with measuring spoons. once you get the hang of this just add together all the powder you add to the tank over 2 weeks time and dissolve it in water. you are now ready for automatic dosing of ferts.
do not be worried about the energy drink leaching into the tank. just rinse out the can first. it is harmless.
