problems with DIY Diffusor

I have a diffusor similar to the one in the link below, but it doesnt work - it just sends large bubbles to the surface, no matter how I adjust the opening. perhaps its not just me and the idea just doesnt work period?

https://www.plantedtank.net/articles/DIY-CO2-Diffuser/8/

I dont really have room for any power-filter/ power-head/ or canisters for the tank. Before trashing the idea, I am considering opening the bottom of the tube and placing an airstone there, thus drawing "adjustable" water flow through the tube (by adjusting the air-flow). my question is, hope it isnt too dumb, but I am worried that the air bubbles may adversely affect the CO2 in some way? I dont really expect it would, if they both dissolve in the water... just wondering

also anyone else with success/failure stories on this device? or other mods for it without available water-flow?

Your idea of getting better results with some added water is good, but using air bubble won't work... they will mix with the CO2 gas and all of that will just escape to the surface.

The idea is to provide a large surface for gas exchange. There will be large bubbles escaping to the surface, that's part of the design.

You might get better results with "the ladder" from Nutrafin/Hagen, works on a similar principle but dissolves CO2 better.

well thats also part of the problem... I have a small shallow tank so I believe most of the CO2 is escaping out the surface... was hoping to create some water turbulence inside the tube to help dissolve the bubbles
