calculating overflow size for tank size

Hi there,

how to I calculate the size overflow I need for my tank? Also from what i have read cyling the tank should be 5-6 times the volume, when calculating this for a tank with a sump do I include this in the size of my tank? so 130lt tank plus 80lt sump means i want my tank to cycle 5-6 x 200lt?

Regards Darren

Opinions seem to vary, as I've heard anywhere from 5-8 cycles an hour, so it's probably more personal judgment than anything. I would imagine if you run a sump, it effectively decreases your bioload ratio, and as a result decreases the filtration demands.

No problem, hope it helps. I am speculating, however, but I think you could get away with a lower turnover. Of course, extra filtration never hurt.
