DIY Drop Checker (test kit 5ML vial)

Parts:
  • spare 5 ml glass test kit vial with plastic cap
  • small length of air line tubing
  • suction cup
  • zip tie

Drill a small hole in plastic cap smaller than air line tubing

Insert tubing so it will go just beyond solution when added

Prepare water solution as needed, add PH drops, invert vial inside tank

Use the reagent from a normal-range pH test kit. The pH scale will read from about 6 = yellow to 7.6 = blue. The API test kit will work, as will many others. The reagent in these test kits will be bromothymol blue.

so here i guess how it work

Pour 5ml of 4kH water inside the vial tube.

Drop 3 drop of API reagent

Let it sit inside the tank. CO2 present in the tank will diffuse into the vial through the vinyl tube ... i stop my though right here .. and don't know what happen next! How i gonna tell the CO2 based on the color ?

Good idea Bass, but it seems like the water/air surface area is very small, so it would take quite a while to react to changes.

Yep, I'm aware that will probably be the case....... but I'm testing it now and will post the results.

Results: It worked, I had blue turn to green at the end of the day but it has two flaws.

1) For one, the tube surface, as mentioned is small and was a slow read out.

2) Where the tube enters the plastic cap is prone to bleeding back into the tank

I suppose it could be perfected, but I'm chalking it up as a learning experience for now.
