Melted a 2 liter bottle. Sigh. DIY co2

@)#%&@#)$(*

I mean, okay, it's only 80 cents, but I hate wasting stuff, so I just drank a ton of Dr. Pepper.

I followed somebody's directions to try to get the bottle sterile, and I poured some almost-boiling water in there.

Now I have a crumpled 2 liter.

Thankfully I have a bunch of 1 liter water bottles around and a t-connector, but man, that's annoying.

So I guess the moral of this story: the new thinner plastic 2 liter soda bottles can't take boiling water. Don't boil yours.

Should I put a bit of weak bleach solution in and then AmQuel it to death? Does it really matter?

From my limited experience I think boiling water is not needed. All I do is rinse mine with hot tap water. I then let them air dry.

I do use Amquel on the water I put in the bottle.

Why are you trying to get the bottle sterile? It's not like you're trying to culture mycelia or quarantine some microbe that fell from space... you're making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Just rinse out the bottle and add your sugar, water and yeast. I never add Amquel or anything to mine.

if you really have to do this. get a bucket of cool water, pour the hot water in while holding the bottle inside the bucket. heat will transfer to the water hence prohibit the bottle to melt.

I decided to just go for it. Rinsed in hot tap water until it smelled like nothing but water. Got it all set up by about 9 last night. It's 12:30 now. I'm getting 1 bubble per 1.5 seconds now! SO COOL!

I figured boiling was overkill, but I tend to specialize in overkill. You should see how many wall brackets I have on my ghetto light fixture.

Now if I could just figure out why my heater set at 77 keeps the tank at 80, I'd be all set. Time for a new heater, I think.

5 seconds in the microwave also works to steralize but like someone else said, its not needed.

Hell, take the 2 liter bottle of Dr Pepper, pour yourself a tall glass, then add some yeast to the rest of the bottle and forget the sugar..

Yes, it works.

Y'know, that idea did occur to me. It would be a lot cheaper than white sugar. Have you tried it? how long does that last? Seems that would bring the cost of DIY co2 to almost $0. Now THAT would be a ghetto rig, and I like it.

Not EXACTLY kool-aid. But I thought I'd give my plants a little tropical whiff of home. Heh.

And yeah, I'm adding plenty of baking soda.

Sorry to jack this but check this. The other day a car crashed into a brick wall leaving a huge hole. The next day somebody painted that very same Kool-Aid add on a massive sign where the hole was. I could see everybody in there cars laughing.
