Question Creating a Moss "Column"?

I would like to create a couple of moss column's for my 5 gallon. I was at the craft store today and saw some wooden dowels about the diameter of a nickel... my brain immediately said "OOOHH that would be cool covered in moss!"

Here's my issue with that:

A: I've NO clue what those dowels are treated with... could be nothing, could be anything.

B: I'm not sure if the dowels would breakdown in water.

Can anyone suggest an alternative? Size is somewhat important, it is a small tank.

Also - if I wanted to "glue" something of this nature to a small rock/slate, what type of adhesive would be safe for aquarium use? I am guessing silicone would be okay.

I don't know about dowels. But check this out and scroll down to the updated pics. It looks similar to what I think you were going for. Hope it helps a little. (:

For glue, you can use aquarium silicone or gel superglue. I did superglue on slate, but it looks like white "bird attack" when dry. Luckily, my moss grew over it relatively fast.

Braiding moss into nylon rope is exactly what I was going to suggest.
