DIY 20gal long stand plans.

After my little brother saw this thread: https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/ph...ss-relief.html

He is VERY interested in building a stand in his woodshop class, for a project. BUT, he would like to do this for a 20 gallon long.

Does anybody know what dimensions to build a stand of this sort would be?

His teacher needs plans drawn out (which i can do, i just don't know the dimensions needed) and then it'll be all good to build.

He'll probably be building this out of pine, since that's the majority of wood that is used in his class.

Also, he doesn't need the canopy dimensions, just the stand dimensions.

I don't know what size a 20long is (that's what he's wanting to buy) and i don't know how much weight it comes out to be, that's why i'm asking for a lil diy help. thanks!

Hi,

I really suggest that you go to the local store where you plan to purchase the tank and take a tape measure. Each company makes their tanks just a little bit different, I found this out the hard way. Did you know there is 1/2 inch difference in ten gallon tanks from allglass and another supplier?

As dwstonebraker mentioned, theres alot or variances from one tank/tankmaker to another. I'd do as they suggested, or better yet actually purchase the tank first.
Good luck with the project.

If you don't want the plastic frame of the tank to show, remember to leave about an 1/8" clearence on each side to recess the tank into.

Buy the tank...

then build the stand.

The framing could easilly add an inch.

Hey that's my thread For that stand and canopy I used 1/2" MDF. One sheet was more than enough. It's glued and screwed. I counter sunk the screws then filled in the holes with wood putty, then sanded smooth. To finish it I painted a couple coats of kilz primer then painted it flat black using latex paints. The inside of the stand is red latex and the inside of the hood is white (either oil or latex, can't remember).

If it were me I would go ahead and buy the tank then build the stand. You could go measure at the store, but if you are planning on purchasing it anyway and have the money now you might as well just buy it.

I love every minute of my diy projects. Good luck to your brother and I hope he enjoys himself as much as I did

Did you use 2x4's to frame it? Or is it sitting on top of the stand and not in it a little bit. You wouldn't happen to have any pictures of the stand without the tank on it would you? Thanks.

NVM I just looked at your tank pictures again, that thing could easily be a night stand lol.

Any pictures of the inside framing?

No inside framing. The top sits on top of the sides, back, and 4" strip along the front. I've built almost identical stands for my 29 gal and 55 gal. I'll see if I can find some more pics for you.
