membrane drop checker: $1, 1 minute

I think I may be the first person to think of this design. It has two parts plus a suction cup or whatever.

1. clear plastic eye shadow case with screw-on lid, 3 cm dia., 5 ml volume, $1 at walmart
2. tyvek from a USPS mailer, $free

To assemble, ditch the eye shadow and drill a hole in the case's cap, as big as possible, so that you're basically left with a threaded hoop (just like a canning jar.) Stretch tyvek over the body of the case, and reapply the lid, sandwiching the tyvek between the threads. Oh, fill the thing with drop-checker fluid first.

Pictures forthcoming, as well as an estimate of the response time. I'm trying to think of ways to diminish the volume of this thing so that the response time could be improved. I suppose I could press the tyvek down into the body of the jar, but that would make it harder for the threads to seal.

edit: fuzzy pics, and it looks like the response time is less than 1h30

Oh, yeah. I got the idea of tyvek from Hoppy, I'm sure. I'm only claiming the idea of sealing the tyvek between the threads as opposed to squishing it against an O-ring. Tom Barr knows way more about gas-permeable membranes than I do anyway...

How did you get the solution in between the two layers? This is much easier than other designs.

I like.

My design only has one layer, which is a liability. Less surface area. This design has one membrane sealed against 5 ml of fluid inside the jar. Other caveats: I haven't actually tried this yet, but I did verify that it's water-tight.

If this helps you visualize the design, imagine taking a drinking glass, placing a piece of fabric over the open top, and rubber-banding the fabric to the glass. Same geometry.

Now off to the store to buy a digital scale...

I tried something similar, (Tyvek over a test tube) but I got fluid through the Tyvek. Now with a piece of Kordon Breather bag, better results (although not as easy to get. I like the Eye shadow case though!
Maybe time to go back to the drawing board.
