Wireless Aquacontroller: IOGear Wireliess Serial

I hope it works, but I've ordered a bluetooth serial adapter, the hope is I'll be able to remotely/bluetooth the data out of the my Aquacontroller.

This could be done with ethernet, but the wireless serial method would actually be cheaper overall. The jr. is about $175 while the ACIII is $400.

is the link to the component. Will report back.

Please do report on future progress.

So what Bluetooth-equipped machine will this talk to?

Wow, very cool. I should've gotten the ACJr unit with the serial port. =p But buying used doesn't give you very many options.

And where is the ACJr for $175?! Does it come w/ the temp probe, pH probe, serial port, and the DC8?

Thanks!

For the $175 I was referring to the controller only.

It'll hook up to a pc that'll run aquanotes and that I'll be able to remotely control via the windows remote control functionality. In other words, I'll always have an up to date log available anywhere there's the internet!

That serial to Bluetooth is a great idea!!!

I'll prob pick one up ...

Sorry I haven't sent you that code you were asking me for yet. I have to copy it by hand off the ACJr because I don't have a pc with a serial port to cut and paste from Aquanotes.

The other trick is that you need a ground loop isolator if the serial cable is going to be plugged in 24/7. You can get errant pH readings without it.

I'm thinking a well grounded power source for both the controller and the power for the bluetooth might eliminate that need. Its tricky though cause you have to read your pH accurately to get the right CO2 levels.

Hmm, well it arrived and was pretty problematic to get the connection between the usb bluetooth adapter and the bluetooth serial adapter. After some patience and rereading the directions (and some finnicky dipswitches) I finally have it connecting.

Trouble is I can see the serial port/controller via hyperterminal but not with aquanotes. The controller only uses three wires(tx/rx and ground) as well as having one position tied to a sensor (usually float sensor). The bluetooth/serial adapter is built for full serial spec to be as compatible as possible and utilizes all 8 normal wires.

I've looked into and experimented with modifying the bluetooth/serial adapter to trick the software into communicating with the controller by shorting pins 7 and 8. That's not working.

Any serial experts out there? The software's not seeing the controller.

In theory you're supposed to be able to solve this problem by connected ports

I missed this thread originally, sounds like a great idea. But I ended up getting the AC3 (for my new 240g) mainly because I really wanted the built in webserver. Neptune does have there own section at ReefCentral, I pretty much signed up there just to be able to discuss stuff in the Neptune and IceCap forums.

Can't get it to work, I've tried modifying the unit via instructions on some online forums. The bottom line is that the unit works via a terminal, you can see and setup the controller. But when it comes to the software accessing the controller its a flop, it seems that there's no way to initiate communications...a bummer.

I know there's a guru who can figure it out, I've tried everything including temporary rewiring of the cable...

Well it was a good attempt. Everything is going wireless now-a-days, and I do run wireless for my laptop, but I also ran cat5 throughout my house into every room so there is a jack close by anywhere in the house. Even wall fished just about every jack that I could, and home ran all the wiring into the utility room (also ran coax and phone at the same time and put in combo jacks) took me two whole days of wiring to get it done.
