In Tank Fluidizer Filter. Would this work?

Was just thinking about this. If I hooked up, say two PVC pipes to a power head and filled the PVC with with the correct filter sand, and either made it overflow type fill, or a sponge on top semi submerged. The latter would make more sense so I don't need to keep exact water level. As long as I use proper mesh smaller then the sand size it should keep the sand from going in the pump impeller. Am I missing anything.
I guess my main goal would the to increase filtration, and use it at the same time as a co2 reactor. Maybe just overkill?

If in doubt, add more plants!

My not-enough-plants-but-not-enough-space-to-put-anymore-so-will-start-going-up-box-of-water.
