Making a DIY filter for a 3 gallon?

In terms of size how big should I make the filter? It will be used to raise a single beta.

To make the filter quiet, should I do an external or internal?

I picked up a cascade internal filter w/ adjustable flow up to 45 gph for just $12. That or something similar probably would be a decent store bought idea... In a bigger tank you can attach all sorts of containers but with such a low volume, the bulk of an assembled rig would leave little room to scape plant and leave room for the fish to swim.

As far as DIY's that small, I've never really found anything decent aside from sponge filters.

Okay... $13.. but it has a reusable sponge and an air inlet, you can up the flow by removing the little adjuster thing for the flow.

I've been using a http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Turtle-Canister-Filter/dp/B0002DIRPU external canister on my 3 gallon, and it works great. It's almost completely silent, and has a lot of media capacity. The flow isn't too strong either.

It's a little more expensive, but I've been really happy with it.

I made an quiet external sponge filter for my DBP 3L tank. Check it out & see if this is what you might need or inspires you for your DIY filter that won't take up any tank space. Good luck.

Dirt + lots of plants and skip the filter all together IMHO.
