Rex Grigg size

Building a Rex Grigg style reactor and I have heard bigger is better.
I have a 75 gal tank with a Sunsun 304a. Not sure of actual flow rate but its pretty decent in my tank. I was wondering how long I should make the main cylinder. I have high cabinet and have a bit of space to work with. Do these have to be mounted vertical? If not I have a lot more room to work with. Should I go with as long as possible or just stick to the 16" pipe his design calls for?
