planning a quad 20L stand

Like the title says I'm planning to build a stand to hold four 20L tanks. Two on a lower shelf and two on the top. I'll be building it out of 2x4s and plywood and will just finish it off with black paint.

I'm looking for suggestions on how high to mount the shelves. So those of you will tiered stands; what have you liked about your setup? What would you change? How much clearance between the top of the bottom tanks and the bottom of the top shelf have you found most comfortable to work with? Best compromise of viewing height between the two tiers?

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas.
Adam

I'd do some simple dados, and mount the shelves into those. It gives a pretty clean look, and it's strong in that the screws aren't bearing the weight.

I did a stand for a 10G (actually a 20XT, but same foot print as a 10) out of a ~12 ft 2x12, just cut it into two shelves and two uprights, used a circular saw and a chisel to cut out the dados, put some glue in, stack everything together, and then some screws to clamp it together. Not more then a couple of beers worth of work

If I remember, I'll try and take a pic tonight.

Thanks. I've made stands before though. I'm mostly concerned with the spacing so I have enough room to work and the tanks are all at a reasonably comfortable viewing height.

I guess it's time to dig out the graph paper.........
