Smile DIY filter?

nevermind- it won't work

So i've been thinking about this for a while- if you somehow created a closed circuit and started a siphon could you make a filter? i think putting the box with the filter media in it above water level would work best (see diagram)
here's a rough idea of what i'm talking about

oh and to increase the water circulation could you use a slightly larger intake tube than output tube or would that not do anything?

it might be a crazy, unrealistic idea and i feel like i am missing something that would prevent this from working, so tell me if you see why it would not work

oh and if you have suggestions post those too

It wouldn't work. You need a height differential to drive the siphon.

Without a change in elevation of the water from beginning to end, water won't flow. Try it with a siphon hose, or a section of tubing, submerge it in a fish tank and remove the air, elevate the middle portion and nothing will happen.

This is how a siphon works.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/siphon-info.htm

What you are describing is not a siphon. You would need a pump inside the tank to pump the water out(push) or a pump to pull the water out "drafting" or pulling. Let gravity work for you, not against.

Means the intake from the tank to the filter has to be below the water line. No matter what, you'll need a pump. I put a pump into a modified plastic breeder box with the hose going to a 2.5" pvc pipe as tall as the tank was deep (2' I think). Pump at one end, PVC at the opposite. Drilled ten 1/16" holes down one side of the pvc close to the bottom. End cap on the bottom, diy bulkhead for the top out of an end cap and a barbed PVC elbow. Worked wonders.

Um, day filters work fine. Think about it, every filter sold in stores today started as a diy filter. So there is nothing wrong with the idea, and someone has thought of it.
