Homemade canopy/stand. Completed

Here are pictures of a stand my dad and I built over my Christmas vacation. We just brought it back to my apartment and it is now the centerpiece of my computer room. It's actually taller than I am by 2"! It was all hand built and designed by us. Lots of trial and error but it sure turned out nice. Tank size is a 40g breeder.

Store bought canopy + stand = ~$500+ for this size (at the stores I was looking at). Cheap wood and not very well supported
Homemade canopy + stand = ~$125. Very sturdy construction, made to MY liking, double enforced supports.

See why homemade stuff is sooooo much better? Sorry but when a tank weighs nearly 400 pounds when full, I'm not chancing it crashing.

Color is a Golden Pecan and was clear coated to protect it from water damage. All that is left is to overdrive some T-8 shoplights and get the gravel! Have a big canister filter, heater, and lightbulbs waiting.

Why is the Canopy so big ? The stand looks good though it doesn't wobble or twist right ? Btw how much was that tank ? and what is its dimensions ?

It's tall due to the shoplights. Wanted to keep them away from the water. The fixtures will be modded to focus light down instead of out. This gave me the option of lowering the lights if needed as well. Figured it was easier to lower them than raise them. Next month I'll probably be building a smaller one for a nice T-5 fixture if I don't like the shoplights. The photos kind of make the canopy look MUCH bigger than it really is. Live and learn right?

Hell no it doesn't wobble or twist! Everything is made of solid, sturdy wood and well nailed/screwed.

The tank was $40 during Petco's $1 per gallon sale.

Dimensions are 36x18x16.

oh cool i'm thinking about getting me a 40 gallon breeder . Yup the photos do make it look bigger. Good idea though i might use it depending on what type of lighting i use if i get the 40.

I'll post pictures of the tank when I get the lights in there and journal how they grow the plants.

Should be interesting. I either hear "ODNO rocks!" or "ODNO sucks". I need to see to believe.

The 40g breeder is a nice size. Gives you a good amount of depth and, for me, nearly the perfect height. Not a big fan of tall tanks.

OH! That looks great!! I was so very close to getting a 40gallon breeder for my turtles but I didn't have a truck

The canopy is monstrous but the purpose they serve makes it all good. I almost thought it was a 20G long becacuse of how big the canopy is.

When was this petco sale?? I feel so cheated haha
the AGA 40g breeder is roughly 36x18x17. give or take a bit
