diy acrylics

Hi all. My first post here. I have a friend that knows I am a fish addict and so he gave me some acrylic he had sitting around his garage for years now. Only enough to maybe get four sides. It's 1/2 thick but has some scratches and such. My question is. How thick would the bottom need to be if it's sitting on a flat surface? Any good step by step instructional videos? Can I polish out the scratches? Thanks all and it's great being here!

I guess I should have specified the size of the pieces. Got so excited it slipped my mind. The two pieces are 12" x 27" and 12" x 29". So I figured I would be able to get a 13" X 14" x 12" roughly so like a 9 gallon tank. Not sure if I could use 1/4" acrylic for the bottom. Would that look weird having beefy 1/2" walls and then a wimpy1/4". Depending on how it turns out it may be my tank in my office at work. Assuming I can get it cleared. Thanks for the youtube video link. Very informative!
