diy filter, ? how effective

Ok, so this is a simple filter:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...ead_filter.php

I was wondering how well it would filter in my 10 gal. using a sponge outer, cultured gravel inside (about 3/4 full maybe), with some filter floss/batting on the top of the gravel? Oh and using a 170 gph ph with spray/disperser bar (I'm using it on the slow setting, not sure exactly how slow that it). I actually already made this filter and everything seems to be ok, but I'm wondering if it's enough filter media to fully/overstock at all? I currently have 1 white cloud minnow, 2 danios, 4 ghost shrimp and a decent amount of plants (low light stuff) that should hopefully grow nice and heavily planted soon. I don't have brand new test results since I ran out of my testing stuff and have to wait for payday to get more.

So, to reiterate, how well do you think this filter would work in my planted tank? Can I stock heavily at all or should I play it safe?
Thanks!
Maureen

All I use to filter a 45 gallon tank now is a sponge filter on a powerhead. The sponge is the Penn-Plax Cascade 600 size, and I use a Maxijet 600 powerhead. The sponge has a hole down the middle, which I plug with a piece of sponge. It does a good job as far as I can tell. The DIY filter should work well too and be plenty of filtration for a 10 gallon tank.

Glad to hear it. I figured it was plenty, but 1.) I've never started a new tank until just recently (I inherited dh 55g when he lost interest) and 2.) never done any aquarium diy until now. So, thank you for your input. I feel much better about leaving everything for now. :-)
