Nightshop's DIY 16" Cube *Pics*

Hello!

I'm going to be constructing a 16"x16"x16" cube in the distant future to test my aquarium building skill

The glass will be 1/4" thickness.
Here are the glass stats:
1 at 16'"x16" (Bottom)
2 at 15 5/8" x 15 1/4" (Sides)
2 at 15 5/8" x 16" (Front and back)

This design allows me to have a 1/8" cocking joint and maintain a 16x16x16 outside perimeter, with an inside perimeter of 15 1/2" x 15 1/2" x 15 3/4" (approx. 16 gallons strangely enough.)

I am planning on using ADA Amazonian sand along with power sand for the substrate and ordering two 13watt deluxe bright kits from AH supply rigged into a DIY canopy.

No C02 aside from what Seachem Excel can supply, unless I rig up a cheap DIY.

I have yet to determine if I want a small canister filter
or a standard HOB filter.

Here are my questions:
1: If i go with AS will two 9 liter bags be adequit?
2: Will the two 13watt kits supply enough lighting, or should I bump it up to three of them? (I plan on using one 6700k and one 10,000k)
3: If I choose to buy a canister filter over a HOB, what would be small enough for this size aquarium? Perhaps a Fluval 105?

I'm ordering the glass within a few days . . . expect a detailed analysis of the setup

50 Gallon - Aquasoil Amazonian, Powersand Special, 130 W 10,000k CF, ADA Fert's, Pressurized C02.

well about the only thing I can really answer is the amount of AS...just do 16x16x3 (3" of substrate) = 768 cu in. Then go to google and type in "768 cubic inches in liters" That'll get you 12.6 liters. So yeah, 2 9 liter bags would be fine. you could even just go with 1 9liter and 1 3liter

Keep a log, I'd like to see how the cube progresses...might be something I might want to do in the future.

I'd go for more light. I'd suggest 3x13 watt kits, just to give you more options. Or, perhaps 2x18 watt PC bulbs, a 13 watt and a 28 watt, whatever you want to do, but with only DIY CO2 and Excel, I'd shoot for around 35-45 watts.

As for the filter, an Eheim 2213 would be perfect. I have one on my ten gallon, and one on my 15 gallon. You'll love the extra media capacity and flow capability.

In college....so no aquariums for a while.....

Thanks for the help jasonh and mrbelvedere!

I don't beleive I can fit any bulb length longer than the 13 watt's, but I can fit three of them in there one after the other. Does setting up the bright kit require any soddering?

I like the eheim classic and will deffinately consider it! I could always make a DIY filter if i feel so adventurous.

Thanks for the stats on the AS, jasonh. Why buy two 9 liter bags when one 9 liter and one 3 liter will work just fine? hah!

A 28 watt bulb is around 12 inches long.

pretty impressive-- I just realized that if it's 16 in" deep, it's deeper than a 60cm ADA cube aquarium. :P

Oh boy, the glass came!

I will be assembling this tank tomorrow evening. . . I can't wait.

I'll post pictures of the procedure on Saturday or if I have time tomorrow night.

Wish me luck!

And here we are:

The siliconed edges are setting over night, and sometime tomorrow I will finish the top and bottom corners. I managed to get a piece of black glass for the back side, which looks fairly nice.

And now the edges are near completion:

In a few days I will lift this and fit it on the base and then silicone it.

I apologise for the crappy pictures, but it's the best i can do without my camera.

1 inch = 2.54 cm

16 inches x 2.54 cm/1 inch = 40.64 cm.
