55g DIY hood

I made a DIY hood to house my 2x55w, 1x40w, and moon lights. I have read and seen pictures of about every hood that is in this section and I wanted to make sure of a couple things before i start using this hood.
1. this thing is not light by any means i used 1x4's for the whole thing is this going to be a problem?

2. Do i need a glass top under my lights or will they be ok with out one? estimated hight from water is 4"

thanks again for all the help that i have gotten so far

If the hood is supported by the lip inside the top frame, I don't think it will be too heavy - assuming you used pine or other relatively light wood. If you put a little 60 mm diameter fan in one end of the hood, with air oulet slots at the other end it won't matter if there is a glass top or not. If you don't, the lights could get pretty hot, or with no glass, the water could be heated too much. I ran into that problem with 110 watts over my 29 gallon.

the top is supported but the fat part of the top of the tank not the inner lip.
as for a pc fan in the hood
1. temp control swith
2. timer

I think that either would work and i have no idea what type of a temp switch i could get or how much one would cost me. I also dont off hand know of at a timer that will let a device run for say 5min every 30min. any thoughts or ideas would be very helpful.
