Types of PVC

I now have all of the parts to make my reactor. I do need one item clarified if someone can help.

All of the instructions for making reactors simply say to use PVC. I know what CPVC is, but are their different grades of regular PVC? The pipe I got is 2" diameter Cresline coextruded cellular core PVC DWV, IPS shc40, ASTM F 891 04. It is boldly marked FOR DRAIN WASTE AND VENT ONLY.

Did I get the wrong stuff?

After spending too much time searching the internet I learned that there is a lot of confusion on this, even amongst plumbers.

It seems there isnít anything about PVC that makes it unsafe chemically for drinking water, but many municipalities do not allow it for structural reasons. At least that is my interpretation. There is also a limitation on temperature. In addition, there is solid core and foam core pipe. Solid core can handle pressure, while foam core is not recommended for pressure applications.

As for suitability in a DIY reactor, I donít see why I canít use what I have since pressure will be minimal. Can anyone confirm my research?

I've never come across foam-core PVC before, except in sheets under the brand name Sintra. Fun stuff to work with - lightweight, fairly strong, drills like wood, can be glued together with solvents, and shaped into curves with minimal heat.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, though. As long as it is not heated, pressurized, or physically abused.
