DIYing a cannister filter question

for some reason.. i want to put a pump outside the cannister in my attempt at DIYing a cannister filter. I know its designed to be submerged in water... but will it overheat if it is not. there will still be water constantly running through the pump.

There are water pumps made that are not meant to be submerged. You could look into those instead...

I think the proper term is "external in-line pumps", look for "dry application"

Magdrive, QuietOne, and Eheim are a few brands off the top of my head that can be used both submersed and emersed.
