Wiring help for DIY moonlights

Hey all,

Having last drawn a circuit diagram about 12 years ago, I have a quick question on DIY moonlights:

There are a plethora of 12v LED strips available online that I'm looking at getting, but wanted to know if multiple 12v strips can be run off a single 12v power source (stripped down cell phone charger), ie. wire them in parallel, or would each one need its own power source?

Thanks for the help.

^ would be a good way to blow out led's....

if ur going constant voltage, you should get a psu which is regulated, and can supply clean constant voltage... ie.. a computer psu.

a cell phone charger, ummm dont think they make one at 12V, mostly 4.5v - 5v ie.. usb compliance... wont work.

if u do have a 12V transformer... thats not regulated and it can blow out your led array.

But u need to see how much amperage that psu can handle, and then determine if the amperage adds up at the end.

you can be short, but u cant exceed.

I used this led calculator and wiring wizard to design mine. I used 4 leds for my circuit. I had an old cell phone charger, plugged in the parameters and it designs the circuit for you.

Hope this helps.

You can run multiple strips off of one of these power supplys. Voltage is not the determining factor here, amperage is.

You will need to be somewhat careful as stated above in that many of these "cheap" chargers can put out voltage in excess of the rating.

LED's will run on almost any current. You could look for a 9V supply, or purchase one with the amperage output required and the LED's would simply run on about 75% brightness.
