LED for my 1 gal Beta

Here is my build for my Beta planted cube.

Project list:
C channel aluminum (diy heatsink)
Cool-White Cree XM-L Star
1000mA Constant Output : #3021-D-E-1000 BuckPuck
radio shack 5k potentiometer
wire
Acrylic

To start I cut and bolted together a 2x2" heatsink out of C channel Aluminum. At first I thought i could just solder the aluminum together with a torch...No dice the solder didnt want to stick at all.

next i thermal epoxied my Star to my sink, soldered my wires, drilled a hole in my acrylic and assembled. I used rtv 103 silicone to attach the heatsink to the acrylic.

assemble acrylic hangover

pieced together the hood out of acrylic and acrylic cement (meth chlor). Ran wires underneath. Gave a shot of gorilla super glue to keep wires in place.

Drilled a hole to transfer wires to back so they can run out down my shelf.

final

finished assembling the acrylic. Hooked up the power (around the house 12v 230ma wall wart) and did the test. Looks great everything works awesome...or does it? I left it to run a few hours so I could monitor everything. 2 hours later my wall wart must have been crap because it started to melt. Glad I monitored it. SO I chucked it and attached a new 12v 1 amp and we are good to go.

Once I get back to work and hook it up I will upload more pics. I might decide i need an optic for the lens if there is too much spill out.

I dont have a par reading but the LED is 280 lumens at 700Ma. Im driving it at 1000Ma (its rated up to 3,000) so im thinking its putting out 300 lumens. Should be plenty. Just from viewing it looks very bright. It is dimable so if need be I can turn it down.

final pics over beta cube

Overall very happy with this build. LED is staying cool. Im only powering it at 3/4 strength because this little guy is really bright. Depending on plant growth I will tune the brightness. I have some frogbit & glosso coming for ground cover. Excited to see how things pan out.

Good job! I built something like that in my head so many times before, good to see it actually materialize LOL.

Edit: I was going to make one for a shrimp bowl.
