Question About Hagen Mini Elite DIY

I have done the mod and have it running in my tank. I do however notice that bubbles that are being pushed out of the factory sponge are still making it to the surface of my 55 gal standard tank.

My question is . Has anyone ever replaced this with a larger surface finer foam?
Imo it would hold more and whatever did get pushed out would be finer. My concern is that it will hurt the flow of the filter and not allow it to be pushed to other side of tank.

Any thoughts?

I think you will further reduce the flow, which leads to bubbles being broken up even less. I think the original coarse sponge is still your best bet.

One thing that might help is to reduce the size of the original bubbles, so they get smashed up finer by the impeller. There is no end to DIY when it comes to creating fine bubbles. I like to use the little black plastic drip irrigation connectors. They can be heated up on one end, and pinched closed to just leave a very small orifice. Just closing off the CO2 line and poking a hole into it works too.

You might even find that it works better without a sponge. There will be small bubbles, but they will dissolve (in the morning) or the CO2 will be exchanged with O2 (in the afternoons, when O2 saturation is reached). So what bubbles to the surface most likely doesn't contain any CO2.
