bulkheads and weight?

I want to drill a bulkhead into the side of a 2.5 gallon, but it occured to me that the weight of the pipe/tubing + water may crack the glass. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks

The glass "should" be OK from the weight of the fitting. It's the attached plumbing that you need to watch. It won't take much of a twitch to crack that thin glass. It also depends on how far from the edge the hole is.

Right, the plumbing is my concern, It will be pretty close to the main tank, and I could devise some supports as needed. Is it "safer" closer to the corner? I would think yes because of the support from the seal?

Maybe I'll build an overflow box, I've done that before with success.

Thanks!

With some 10g tanks all hard plumbed into a system with 4 x's 240g sumps the 10g tanks starting breaking for what seemed to be no reason. Broke a couple at installation but others cracked weeks later. Had to replace them all with custom 10's using thicker glass.

Have you researched the DIY PVC overflow? I'm sure you could make one small enough for the 2.5 with half in pvc. Just don't know what kind of flow you're looking for. You could always make 2 though. Once you have the PVC glue, the actual pvc is cheap cheap cheap.

A friend of mine drilled his 5 gallon and made a nano reef setup from the tank. He broke it once attaching a PVC fitting to the bulkhead, scrapped the tank, and redrilled another. It was a lot of work and he ended up losing corals in the transition.

At that size, the glass is really thin and fragile.

Yeah, I think drilling and securing bulkheads is too risky now.

I've done overflows and sumps before, so I'm comfortable doint the overflow box using an old HOB filter.

Why not reinforce the bulkhead area with a piece of glass siliconed on?
