advice on painting a polyester resin decor piece

I think I may have posted here a few months back about a fountain I wanted to turn into a bubbler for my 42bf. It was a table top fountain, the main piece was removed and cut down to fit. We believe it to be made of polyester resin. I initially coated it with Krylon fusion, hammered finish. I let it dry at least a week, I think I used 2 coats for coverage, waiting in between each coat. After placing in the tank, I removed it after almost a month because I could see where the paint was being removed by (not totally sure though) my otos. I could just see little dot like areas that were not there when painting was completed. I would like to put this back in my tank, and I wondered if anyone has any advice for the paint finish. Should I try roughing up the surface and try repainting with krylon, or something different? What about sealing it with an epoxy? I am not familiar with this type of DIY but am willing to give it my all to get the end result that looks good, and will be safe for my tank. TIA for any advice
