driftwood

just put a piece of drift wood in my tank and now it seems dark and brown. Will this go away or what? what should i do?

Wood always darkens when put in water.

Do you mean the wood, or the water, arbernard?

The wood releases tannins. Tannin darkens the water. Eventually this will stop, and flush out with water changes, although it could be a while. The tannin also slightly softens the water, and acts as a mild antibacterial.

Always curious.
