Diatom filters and UV sterilizers work well. Both aren't cheap unless they are crap.

Blackouts and water changes are the cheap way.

What is your fish load/filtration/feeding like? I only have green water when I add a bunch of fish, but before the bio filter catches up. It usually measures 0 or near zero on an ammonia test, but recedes after a week or two.

Always curious.

daphnia or cyclops work too if your fish don't eat them super fast.

Do you have any idea what is causing the green water to begin with? I would be spend some making sure there is nothing you can do to find the root of the problem if you have not already.

I say create a daphnia refuge and skip the expensive UV. You get rid of your green water naturally and have leftover live food for your fish. Not to mention its way cheaper.

If you cannot keep daphnia alive...I wouldn't even trust you with my pet rock!
