Rex style diffuser q about elbow

Im ordering parts so i was wondering is the elbow on top of contraption needed or is it just there for diffuser to fit better under aquarium? Since my filter is behind aquarium it fits me better to have entering hose in line with pipe, not on 90 angle. tnx

done for fit (imo) Mine are placed inline after the canister.
I have made three of these and like the way they work.

You try to avoid creating an air pocket in the canister filter by putting the reactor on the outflow side.

Pictures of my rigged reactor following an Eheim Pro3e 2078 then though an inline heater and returning to the tank.

My reasoning for the modification;

Down flow reactors do just that, they create a downward loop in the plumbing.
This can create a vapor lock trying to prime a cleaned canister.
The small ball valve on the upper right of my reactor head is opened over a cup to allow air to vent until water purges all the air from the canister.
Once it spits water I close it and start the filter.

HTH

Do you have anything inside reactor? That (2 inch?) plug on upper part of reactor is for maintanance?
