sump water percentage

i want to try and build a sump for my small 13 gallon as a learning experience thing.. i have to start somewhere so what is the percentage size sump to aquarium ratio thingie ? you know if i have a 13 gal the sump should be __ gal ??

A good % is whatever is cheap. You want enough room for the pump/heater and a large enough volume that evaporation will not cause it to run dry too quickly. So with cheap in mind, I would start with either a 10 gal or a rubbermade bucket...

I agree with BR, start with something cheap to try like a 5 gallon bucket. There are a couple recent threads floating around that discuss sumps and overflows, try a quick search.
