pop bottle?

Could someone point me to a thread or webpage explaining this DIY pop bottle method I keep reading about. I googled it but not coming up with much useful.

Thanks!

Why not just get a CO2 tank, regulator, etc.,etc, a great diffuser from Nicole and do it the "Modern" way.

Because it has a pretty steep cost at entry even if it is cheaper in the long run and most people want to try out CO2 before they buy it.

I've got 2 pressurized systems (CO2 tank, regulator, etc), and I've also got the Hagan DIY CO2 kit.

As long as you aren't keeping really sensitive fish/shrimp, the DIY method works pretty well. I decided to buy the kit instead of doing it with pop bottles, because the I didn't want to mess with drilling holes in pop bottles and mucking about with silicone. Plus it looks nicer. I did swap out the Hagan CO2 ladder with a $10 diffuser.

Using store bought yeast, it runs pretty consistently for about 2 weeks, then you just dump it out and refill. Its done wonders for my tank that's heavily planted with low light plants (mostly types of java fern and moss).

Why do you want to build your own pop bottle?

It's pretty simple. Drill a small hole in the bottle cap, push the tubing through and pick a way to diffuse it. Into a powerhead or filter intake is usually the simplest way.

The sugar/yeast/water ratio is the tricky part.
