FYI, Tank Trim Stains Perfectly!

Had a stand for a tank of mine that I wanted to re-finish so I bought some Minwax wood stain etc... The stand came out much darker than I had expected and no longer matched my tank trim As awkward looking as it was I figured attempting to stain the plastic trim couldn't hurt. I was worried how it would dry; clump, bubble, etc... But it turned out GREAT! The stain doesn't soak in at all as you would expect but getting the desired transparency is quite easy. One stroke on and if its too dark just stroke it a second time with the semi-dry and of the applicator (sponge brush). Matches my stand perfectly!

Just a little FYI in case anyone was wondering

Wood colored trim, but... I might try to "woodize" a black trim. Just a little primer then lightly mixed black n brown stain might give the streaks. Just one more project to add to my list

Camera coming soon

Just buy some of that pre-glued iron-on (or sticky tape style) wood veneer at Lowes to make plastic look like wood. Trim it with a razor knife (cautiously and slowly!!!!) then stain it.

Always pre-clean the plastic and, if using the iron-on hot-glue type veneer, scuff the plastic up real good with some 100-grit (roughly) sandpaper. Don't rough up if you use the pressure-sensitive sticky tape type.

BTW I recommend you do one coat (or two) of spray-on polyurethane over the top of your Minwax-stained plastic you have right now. The Minwax is oil-based, which is fine, but cleaners and water droplets may remove it over time. Spray cans of poly can be found at Lowes, just tape/paper off the tank glass to keep overspray from it.

I recommend gloss or semi-gloss.
